18/10/19 - Years 10 & 11 History Trip
To mark the lead up to Holocaust Memorial Day 2020 & the 75 year anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau our Year 10 & Year 11 History pupils had the privilege of hearing Holocaust survivor Tomi Reichental's very moving and personal story. A huge thanks to our friends at St Catherine's College Armagh for such a warm welcome and for hosting such a special event. Thanks to Mrs Reid, Mrs Ferris and Mrs Patterson for accompanying our pupils.
16.10.19 - ChilliDrive Car Crash Simulator
Autoline Insurance visited our Motor Vehicle & Road User Studies classes today as part of their Respect the Road Campaign. Both Year 11 & 12 classes benefitted from the 'hard hitting' programme that helps to raise awareness around the factors contributing to road traffic collisions and also educates and encourages young drivers to adopt a more responsible approach to driving.
To date, they have delivered the programme to more than 51,000 16-18 year olds across NI.
16.10.19 - Work4UPlus Alternative Careers Awareness
Year 12 pupils attended the ‘Work4UPlus Alternative Careers Awareness Event’ which was held in the Canal Court Hotel Yesterday.
The Event explored career alternatives from Performing Arts to Sports, Entertainment, Media, Hair & Beauty, Innovation, Enterprise and Retail. Some notable businesses were in attendance, including ABP food processors, MJM Marine, Around Noon, Newry.ie and Into Film – to mention just a few.
The event was all under one roof and it was a great opportunity for our pupils to talk to real employers about the skills and entry criteria needed to secure employment in these types of jobs. It was a very well organised event attended well by local schools and everyone enjoyed the experience.
15/10/19 - LMC Cookery Demonstration
Year 12 GCSE Food and Nutrition pupils had the privilege and pleasure of a cookery demonstration in room 5 yesterday. Patricia from the Livestock and Meat Commission (LMC) was in school to inform us of the benefits of including red meat in the diet. Beef Nachos and Lamb with leeks, bacon, potatoes and crème fraiche were on the menu.
The areas of food safety, hygiene, meat cuts and catering for nutritional needs at key stages of the lifecycle were discussed. The Eatwell Guide (current UK Healthy Eating Model) provided the framework on how to meal plan and ensure dietary needs are consistently met. Pupils were also able to ascertain the sort of jobs available in this area of the agri-food sector as well.
However, the best part of all was reserved to the end – the sampling- just in time for lunch. The dishes were truly beautiful and should certainly provide food for thought for the pupils planning for their forthcoming GCSE practical examinations.
10/10/19 - Mental Health Awareness Day
Through the Shared Education Program supported by the Council, 9X participated in Mental Health Awareness workshops held in Newry Leisure Centre. Not only did pupils have a lot of fun participating in the workshops but they were reminded to ‘Take 5’ every day:-
Connect with people around you
Be active – Go for a walk/run or other physical activity
Take notice – Look around you for beautiful, new or extraordinary things in your everyday life
Keep learning – Don’t be afraid to try something new
Give – Do something nice for a friend or stranger

Yesterday (Wednesday 9th October), Newtownhamilton High School welcomed the National Deaf Children’s Society (NDCS) Roadshow which tours the UK delivering fun and engaging workshops for deaf children and young people, their friends and families and the professionals that support them.
The day started with an introduction from NDCS staff Steve and Jake before all Key Stage 3 pupils engaged in 30 minute workshops that helped to raise deaf awareness, inclusion and deaf identity. There was also an opportunity for our senior pupils to visit the bus during their lunch break.
Overall, a great experience for our pupils with thanks to NDCS staff Steve and Jake also to interpreter Steven.

02/10/19 - European Day of Languages
‘Le petit –déjeuner français’ et ‘le déjeuner européen’ were the order of the day at Newtownhamilton High School on Friday!
A big thank you to the marvellous canteen staff at Newtownhamilton High School, who came up with a wonderful French style breakfast and European lunch menu to celebrate European Day of Languages on Friday 27th September.
Pupils indulged in a selection of ‘viennoiseries’, such as croissants, pain au chocolat and crêpes during break time, provided by the canteen; whilst Mrs Laverty and her Year 11 and 12 pupils provided ‘du chocolat chaud’ for the pupils.
This was followed by a delightful selection of dishes at lunch time, with pupils and staff enjoying a variety of typical European dishes such as lasagne, pastas, chicken fricassée and garlic baguette.
Staff and pupils used the opportunity to brush up on their language skills and phrases such as ‘Bon appétit’, ‘s’il vous plaît’ and ‘merci’ were in excellent use throughout lunch time!
Fantastique !
