27/06/17 - Year 8 History Trip to Carrickfergus Castle
Year 8 finished off a great first year studying the Normans in History by stepping outside their classroom and exploring the magnificent Carrickfergus Castle which was built by John de Courcy in 1177. They enjoyed discovering what it was like to be a Norman knight and fought over their different weapons! A final stop at MacDonalds ended a wonderful day out. Thanks go to Mrs Reid and Mrs Graham who accompanied the pupils.
26/06/17 - Year 8 send off their Designs to Google!
Time was spent being creative in the Art room, by year 8, when they had to come up with a creative and new design for Google. They were so good Miss Johnston decided to post them off to Google’s Headquarters in London as a present. Who knows year 8, maybe you will see your design some day when you are Googling!!!
22/06/17 - Sports Day 2017
Temperatures Soar and Records Tumble @ NHS Sports Day
Great weather accompanied by a great turnout from pupils made Sports Day 2017 a real success. What was really evident was the commitment and dedication all pupils showed to complete their events to the best of their ability to win bonus merits for their respective houses.
This was also a day when lots of long standing records were smashed:
Elle Corkey broke the Year 8 girls 800m record previously held by Aimee Henry in 2005.
Dylan McGurgan in Year 9 broke the discus record by Glen Hawthorne in 2009.
Ben Telford helped himself to two new school records on the day, beating Alex McNiece's 2016 Year 11 records by a whisker and in the 800m took down Lee Tower's record in 2009. Ben becomes the fastest pupil ever recorded in Newtownhamilton High!
Jessica Acheson broke Tanya Donaldson's Shot Putt record set in 2008.
Alex McNiece became the record holder for the 100m in Year 12 by beating Robin Smyth's 16 year record set in 2001.
Well done to all competitors on a very successful event!
22/06/17 - Year 9 STEM
After a week of exam pressure, Year 9 enjoyed a fun day of STEM activities delivered by the British Army Recruitment and Careers section. Pupils had the opportunity to participate in a ‘CSI style’ forensics investigation, focusing on fingerprint profiling and recovery. Students also had the opportunity to design and manufacture a hovercraft from a variety of everyday objects. The day ended with a hovercraft race in the Technology suite. A fantastic, informative and fun day filled with excellent STEM activities and useful career guidance. A truly brilliant day!
