29/02/16 - DIY Maths
Our Year 11 Essential Skills Application of Number pupils recently travelled with their teacher Mr A Cousins to the B&Q store in Newry. The purpose of their visit was to carry out research on the different types, colours and cost of paint so that it can be included in their portfolios which they are currently working on.
Of course lunch in the nearby McDonald's restaurant made the trip a bit more enjoyable for Jamie, Calvin, Lauren, Jason and Thomas.
25/02/16 – Chicks Hatch Out in Agricultural Department
Our GCSE Agriculture & Land Use Studies pupils have had an increased focus over recent weeks following the arrival of 16 chicks. The collaborative programme, which includes pupils from 4 post-primary schools in a South Armagh partnership, recently benefited from the donation of an automatic egg incubator from the Poultry Industry Education Trust. A further donation of eggs from Mr Willie Johnston of Johnstons of Mountnorris meant the pupils have been able to monitor the progress from the incubation stage. Johnstons also kindly vaccinated the chicks in order to prevent the spread of disease when they move to their new homes with the pupils.
Principal Neil Megaw stated “We are thankful to Mr Basil Bayne from the Poultry Industry Education Trust for donating the incubator and also to Willie Johnston for the donation of eggs. Both gentlemen also provided excellent guidance throughout incubation and hatching. I also pay tribute to our teacher Johnny Black and our caretaker Richard Gibson for all their work in looking after the chicks both during and outside of school hours".

23/02/16 – Newtownhamilton High Officially Opens New PE Facilities
The staff and pupils of Newtownhamilton High School celebrated the official opening of their new 2G pitch and fitness suite at an event held recently. Overnight snow on the outdoor 2G pitch did not prevent special guest Mr Gregory Butler (Education Authority Southern Regional Manager Director) declaring the facilities open for use by cutting both ribbons in the presence of pupils, staff and other invited guests.
Principal Neil Megaw stated “These new facilities are a tremendous boost to our timetabled PE lessons, the extra-curricular programme and local community members. I thank the Education Authority for their continued financial investment in the school and also for the professionalism of their staff in overseeing the completion of the work. Pupils, staff, contributory primary schools and community members are all benefiting from these state of the art facilities”.
11/02/16 - Year 9 Young Enterprise
Year 9 students travelled to Rushmere to compete in the annual Quickstart Trade Fair, whihc is organised by Young Enterprise NI. This programme was designed to develop entrepreneurial skills and enable children of all abilities to set up their own companies and products.
Our Year 9 pupils traded with the public and pitched their company ethos to local entrepreneurs who judged the competition. Newtownhamilton pupils surpassed all expectations of their LLW teachers Mrs Flanagan and Mrs Laverty, when the judging panel announced ‘Little People, Big Ideas’ as runners-up and ‘Deals R Us’ as the overall winners!! Well done to all our talented pupils – Lord Sugar better watch out!
10/02/16 – Year 8 Shared Education
Our Year 8 pupils recently travelled to Newry High School to participate in Day 4 of the Delivering Social Change Shared Education Signature Project.
This cultural diversity programme has been looking a wide range of identity issues during the year in partnership with LLW lessons. This latest event involved pupils from Newtownhamilton High, St. Joseph’s High Crossmaglen, St. Paul’s High Bessbrook and hosts Newry High learning more about 10 different countries. Pupils used the knowledge gained to produce displays for each individual country which were then presented to all pupils.
A big thank you goes to Newry High School for their hospitality on the day. Day 5 of the programme will be held in Newtownhamilton High in May 2016.
02/02/16 - GCSE Art and Design Trip to True Colours and IKEA
A group of Year 11 and 12 pupils attended the top GCSE and A Level Art exhibition in the Ulster Museum this week. The exhibition did not fail to disappoint again and inspired and gave our pupils lots of ideas for their own projects in school.
We then went to visit a past pupil Kirsty Riddle, who now works as a Visual Merchandiser within the Interior Design and Communication Team for IKEA. Kirsty and her line manager gave us a tour about the creative side to IKEA. Kirsty is involved with the creative displaying of merchandise to try and tempt the public to buy for the up and coming season. She showed us some of her teams latest work and how they have to come up with mood boards and ideas right through to the painting and displaying of sets. If you visit IKEA you will more than likely bump into Kirsty and see some of her beautiful work. Look out especially for a ‘Time for Tea’ display which she designed and made.
