27/02/12 - Breakfast Morning
The Breakfast Morning that was held on Wednesday 15 February was really well supported by the pupils and staffs in both Newtownhamilton High & Primary schools and the community, who all turned out in force to remember Year 12 pupil James Henry. We also appreciate that Cortamlet Primary School also offered support for the event in their own premises.
The occasion, which was bravely attended by members of the Henry family circle, gave people the opportunity to remember James’ life whilst sharing sausage and bacon baps which were prepared by Mrs Sharon Porter and her willing team.
Principal Garnet Mullan spoke about James and his potential and how the tragedy had affected so many; he thanked all those who attended and all who had contributed to the organisation of the event and its success. Thanks particularly are offered to the two local businesses (that wish to remain anonymous) for providing the food either free or at a reduced rate. Their generosity accompanied by community donations ensured that a magnificent total of £835 was raised for Tullyvallen Football Club which will help fund the development of their impressive new facilities and the excellent work which they do for young people in the area.
24/02/12 - Assembly Delivered By Former Pupils
Former Newtownhamilton High School pupils Lauren Henry and Kirsty Riddle delivered the Friday morning assembly this week. Lauren and Kirsty who are studying at QUB and SRC (Newry) respectively spoke to staff and pupils about their planned trip to Romania in July 2012.
The girls will be travelling to the eastern european country on behalf of Express Aid International in order to help care for sick children and improve facilities in the many local orphanages. Newtownhamilton High School will be supporting Lauren and Kirsty in raising their required £1500 by holding a non-uniform day on Friday 9 March.
Community groups/members are also encouraged to support this project - if interested, please contact either Lauren or Kirsty.

This event is a mass youth challenge and has been organised through, and supported by, Newry and Mourne Council, volunteer organisations and the uniformed and emergency services.
In preparation, a Briefing Day was attended by 12 pupils from Year 11 and Mr Chambers, on 11th February 2012 at Castle Ward, County Down.

10/02/12 - Young Enterprise Quick Start Programme
Year 9 pupils have recently been participating in the Quick Start programme delivered by Young Enterprise. This involved pupils creating their own companies and selling a range of products to the public at Rushmere Shopping Centre in Craigavon.
This venture gave pupils an important insight into how to operate a business and also develop the many skills and qualities required to be a successful entrepreneur. They also had the opportunity to meet Jim Eastwood (pictured below) from the popular television progamme The Apprentice.
08/02/12 - English & History Department Celebrate Pupils' Achievements
The English and History Department recently launched and judged a successful WWI poetry competition with Year 10 pupils. The departments have been developing strong cross-curricular links and plan to support each other in the assessment of KS3 pupils' communication skills by building upon such tasks. The pupils were required to create emotive poems that combined their historical knowledge of what life was like for a soldier in WWI with their literacy and extended writing skills. The entries were judged by Mrs Reid and Mrs Robinson. Both teachers were very impressed with the quality of work submitted and agreed that there were many worthy and commendable entries. However after much debate a final decision was reached and the following pupils were awarded individual prizes in their History class.
Winning Entries
1st Place – Sarah-Louise Mitchell, Standing Still
2nd Place – Shannon Hoy, Remember My Words
3rd Place – Elizabeth Blackwood, One Last Time...
07/02/12 - Breakfast Morning
Newtownhamilton High School will be holding a Breakfast Morning on Wednesday 15 February from 10.30-11.30am. This event, which is open to members of the community and school pupils, is being organised to remember our popular Year 12 pupil James Henry who passed away tragically on Wednesday 21 December 2011.
It is intended to offer sausage and bacon baps priced at £2.50 for adults and £2.00 for school children aged under 16 with all proceeds going to Tullyvallen FC to help fund the development of their impressive new facilities and the excellent work which they do for young people in the area.
In order that we can plan the catering arrangements so that enough food is available, it is important that we receive an estimate of the numbers who will be attending. This can be done by either completing and returning the reply slip on the home letter (dated 07/02/12) which can be accessed on the link below or by telephoning the school office on 02830 878246.
We hope that you are available to support us at this event.

02/02/12 - Former Pupils Contribute to History Lesson
Newtownhamilton High School were delighted to welcome back former pupils Lucy Bell and Lauren Henry as they supported History Teacher Mrs O Reid in the delivery of her lesson today.
The lesson aimed to inform Year 10 pupils of possible future courses and jobs that studying GCSE History can lead to. Lucy, who is a 2nd year student at Stranmillis University College, and Lauren (2nd year pharmacy at QUB) spoke to the pupils about their experiences of studying History and the opportunities that it has had on their careers to date.
Lucy and Lauren then took time to catch up with a few familiar faces before returning back to Belfast in order to continue with their studies.

01/02/12 - Holocaust Memorial Day
As part of Holocaust Memorial Day our KS3 pupils had the opportunity to view the historical-drama film 'The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas' based on the novel of the same name by Irish writer John Boyne.
The film explores the horror of a World War II extermination camp through the eyes of two 8 year old boys; one the son of the camp's Nazi commandant, the other a Jewish inmate. Pupils spent the rest of the day in their English and History classes considering why it is so important that we remember the Holocaust. Year 9 English pupils will be creating poems based on their reflections and Year 10 History students will be studying the Holocaust as a detailed Unit of Work.
