28/04/17 – Khulula Choir
Newtownhamilton High School were delighted to welcome the Khulula Choir from Swaziland to morning assembly on Thursday 27th April. This choir is supported by Challenge Ministries and represents hundreds of children in Swaziland who have been orphaned or who are in vulnerable situations but have been able to deal with the pain of abandonment, abuse and loss through God’s love.
During the special assembly, the Khulula Choir shared God’s love through song, testimony and dance. Pupils from Newtownhamilton Primary School also performed on stage with our visitors. Thanks also to the Rev James Porter for his message during the assembly.
Further information on how to support the Khulula Choir can be obtained from the Facebook pages of both the Khulula Choir and Challenge Ministries.
28/04/17 – Congratulations Jaymey
Congratulations to former pupil Jaymey Whyte who achieved 100% in her GCSE Art & Design exam during her time at Newtownhamilton High. Jaymey, who is currently studying A Levels at Newry High School, is pictured receiving her CCEA certificate from our Art & Design Teacher Miss Karen Johnston. Well done Jaymey.
24/04/17 – 9X History Video Link
The link below shows a short video clip on work completed by 9X pupils as part of a North South Digital Literacy History Project called 'Different Lenses'. Our pupils researched the significance and impact of local 19th century minister Rev Daniel Gunn Brown.
Well done to everyone involved.
11/04/17 - 9A AMMA Centre Visit
On Tuesday 4th April 2017, pupils in 9A travelled to the AMMA Centre, Armagh to take part in a green-screen filming workshop.
As part of their RE classes, pupils were studying the Easter Story. In addition to this, pupils have also been exploring how the modern day media have a big role in reporting big news stories. Based on this combination, pupils were then tasked with planning, filming and editing news reports giving details of the Easter story.
Pupils were all able to get experience in working both in front and behind the camera and received a very good insight into methods used by the TV & Film industry in making media productions.
All in all a very enjoyable day!
11/04/17 - Easter Cookery
Pictured are some of the Eatser treats that were prepared in our Home Economics department over the past few days.
11/04/17 - Year 9 Dragon's Den
On Friday 7th April, Year 9 students competed in the final part of their ‘Quickstart’ programme – Dragon’s Den. Representatives from Young Enterprise and local entrepreneur, Mr Graham Park, made up the ruthless panel of Dragons.
Each Quickstart team had to pitch their company and products to the panel, and then answer a series of gruelling questions, analysing every component of their company. Rural Retailers were triumphant and just beat Newtown’s Finest, to claim the prize of best company!
All pupils involved thoroughly enjoyed the ‘Quickstart’ experience, and LLW teachers Mrs Flanagan and Mrs Laverty agreed that every child performed to an exceptional standard!
11/04/17 - Autoline Insurance Visit
The Motor Vehicle and Road User Studies department at Newtownhamilton HS hosted a team from Autoline Insurance on Tuesday 11th April. Initially pupils listened to a very hard hitting presentation before having the opportunity to experience the car simulator.
Vice Principal and Head of MVRUS Mr Cousins stated that, "We place a major emphasis on the importance of road safety and today’s event has helped to raise the profile of this very relevant issue. The Autoline team delivered a very interactive presentation, dramatizing many of the key causes of collisions on our roads including mobile phone use, speeding and drink driving. Pupils enjoyed the event and feedback suggested that it had made them think about the consequences of breaking the laws of the road. Some of the pupils will be learning to drive in the near future so hopefully today’s presentation will remain at the forefront of their minds and they will become responsible road users".
