Motor Vehicle & Road User Studies (MVRUS) - Why is it Necessary?
For many years it has been accepted that our educational system must equip young people not only with the knowledge to pass examinations but with the skills necessary to cope with everyday life after school. Therefore one of the most important lifeskills is the ability to cope with road and driving conditions as they exist in Northern Ireland today. The loss of young lives is both tragic and largely unavoidable. At Newtownhamilton High School, we believe that Motor Vehicle and Road User Studies (MVRUS) helps to prepare for and avoid the problems that pupils will inevitably face on the roads.
MVRUS is offered as an option choice to all pupils at GCSE level. It is an intensive two year course that leads to the award of a GCSE certificate.
What is involved?
MVRUS leads, after two years, to an examination in three parts. A theory paper worth 50%, an investigative study with a marks allocation of 25% and a practical riding test carrying 25% of the marks.

This part of the course is carried out on a 49cc moped within the school grounds and not on the public roads. Pupils are given their first experience of powered transport in a safe supervised environment where they do not have to contend with other traffic.
Coursework
All pupils must complete an investigative study on a road safety situation located close to the town of Newtownhamilton. This involves observing and recording a wide range of traffic related issues. The study will also help to develop research skills and to conclude and suggest recommendations on the improvement of safety.
What are the Advantages of Studying MVRUS?
Firstly the course will instil a greater knowledge and understanding of road safety in pupils taking the subject.
Secondly a good grade in this subject will be accepted by most employers including the Northern Ireland Civil Service Commission, the largest single employer in the province. Grade C or above is also accepted by Queens University, UU and the Teacher Training Colleges as a qualification for entry to degree courses.
Career Possibilities
You may be interested in a future with the Association of British Insurers, a career involving road safety, teaching others in road and vehicle use, or a job in the transport industry that requires you to drive to various locations.
