25/04/15 - Mourne Mountain Adventure
The rain couldn't dampen the spirits of our team of adventurers as they joined scores of other participants in the fourth annual Mourne Mountain Adventure. The popular youth challenge event may have missed out on the sunshine of the last few days but that didn't prevent our pupils from setting out in high spirits - hopefully they are still as happy at the end of the day's walking!
24/04/15 – Late Push for 2G Completion
It is all hands to the pump at Newtownhamilton High as the building contractors put the finishing touches to the new 2G pitch. Fencing and the laying of tarmac and the synthetic grass carpet are all to be completed within the next few days so that the official handover can proceed as planned at the end of next week. Exciting times ahead!
24/04/15 - Year 9 LLW Present Cheques
Year 9 LLW students raised money from their Quickstart companies as part of their LLW course, and kindly decided to donate some of their profits to local charities close to their heart.
‘Newtown Bargains’ presented a cheque for £50 to Mrs Sharon Nesbitt, a representative from Newry and Mourne Community Therapy Centre for MS.
‘Helping Hands’ presented a cheque for £90 to Mrs Margaret Neville, a representative from Marie Curie.
17/04/15 - Year 9 Quickstart – Dragon’s Den
The Year 9 LLW students presented their Quickstart companies and products to Helen Fitzpatrick (Young Enterprise) and Ann Morgan (Ulster Bank). These budding entrepreneurs confidently explained the entire process of their journey as new business partners, evaluating their own companies and statistically presenting their outcomes.
Both Helen and Ann were extremely impressed with the high standard set by all groups and after much deliberation, they decided ‘Rural Retailers’ were the overall winners followed by the highly commended ‘Newtown Bargains’! Mrs Flanagan (LLW teacher) praised all Year 9 students for their excellent work ethic and team spirit. Each and every child was a credit to their school and family – well done to all!
17/04/15 - Year 10 Greenmount Visit
As part of their on-going ‘Ultimate Farming’ project (run by W5 and supported by the Royal Academy of Engineering) Year 10 visited Greenmount Agricultural College (CAFRE) on Wednesday 15th April. Here they had the opportunity to see Cafre’s ‘state of the art’ dairy unit which, according to the college, ‘has been designed to best meet the education and training needs of agriculture students and the dairy industry, to enable the delivery of knowledge and technology transfer and to comply with all relevant legislation and animal welfare recommendations.’
Staff members Mrs Coyle, Mr Cousins and Mr Chambers, along with the whole of Year 10 had a thoroughly enjoyable day; with everyone learning something along the way!
15/04/15 - A Familiar Face in the School Canteen
The start of the Summer term marked the arrival of our new Canteen Senior Unit Supervisor Mrs Sharon McNiece, who takes over the position from the recently retired Mrs Sharon Porter.
Mrs McNiece is no stranger to Newtownhamilton High as she lives locally and is also a former pupil and parent of the school. She previously worked in a similar role at City of Armagh High School for the past 20 years.
Principal Neil Megaw commented "Although I have no responsibility for our school canteen, I have a very keen interest in this service as it is used extensively by our pupils and staff. I am therefore delighted to welcome Sharon to Newtownhamilton High and take this opportunity to offer her our best wishes for her new job. She arrives with an excellent reputation and I have no doubt that Sharon and her team will deliver high quality food that will provide us with the nourishment required to complete the school day".
01/04/15 - 9A English Easter Writing Competition
Congratulations to William Coleman who has been chosen as the overall winner of 9A’s Easter Writing Competition. William begins his Easter holidays a whole £5 richer, after submitting an excellent entry. Well done also to Adam Gibson, Sam Blackwood and William McBride who were runners-up. The boys will all enjoy their Easter treats!
9A pupils were asked to write a magazine article, imagining that the Board of Governors had decided that Easter holidays were too long, and 2 days would be enough. Pupils obviously felt strongly about this, and demonstrated their excellent persuasive writing skills, highlighting their disgust at such a proposal.
Mrs Graham was very impressed with the quality of entries and congratulates all pupils who have worked tremendously well in English this term. Well done everyone!
